I’m Reading: Character Is Destiny

Character Is Destiny: Inspiring Stories Every Young Person Should Know and Every Adult Should Remember

By John McCain with Mark Salter

I’ve owned this book for years but have just now started reading it to Evan, my younger son, as an informal way to supplement our teaching about virtue and morality. I think younger kids will have a bit of trouble absorbing this volume in their personal reading, but Character Is Destiny lends itself to good discussions about ethical issues and historical examples of heroism if read aloud by parents. For some reason, my hardcover copy is blue, I think because an older book with the same title, by Russell Gough, is also blue. I suspect that Sen. McCain made a command decision to avoid confusion.
