Hazardous

While we’re right to discuss ways to reduce the number of people killed by the police, let’s not forget what the scofflaw Eric Garner was doing: selling single cigarettes on the street. He was participating in New York’s black market for cigarettes. Garner was doing so because a pack costs around $14.50 in Gotham, much of that cost due to the city’s high taxes on tobacco. People no doubt buy “loosies” from people like Garner because they can no longer afford to buy a full pack legally. Perhaps the surgeon general should warn us that sometimes high taxes, at least in New York, can be hazardous to your health.
