Brainstorm

President Obama, with only two years left in his presidency, is giving stuff away (with other people’s money) as if there is no tomorrow. Now he is promising two years of community college for free.

Anyone who knows anything about higher ed realizes that the cost of going to a four-year university has exploded largely because of federal loans and grants. When the “free” money flows, schools have no incentive to keep an eye on costs. If Obama’s latest brainstorm comes to fruition, expect the same thing to happen at community colleges, which represent one of the few remaining values in higher ed.

Don’t say you weren’t warned.
