What kind of country have we become when you have the “civil right” to force a business owner to provide a product or service that violates his or her religiously informed conscience? The Founders made religious liberty the first item in the Bill of Rights because of its vital importance in a free society. They never could have foreseen–nor would they have supported–raising the “right” to a wedding cake or floral arrangement above freedom of religion.
Abraham Lincoln’s words of warning may soon be a pronouncement of judgment: “At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.”
