Many issues confront Christians at the dawn of the third millennium: AIDS, nuclear proliferation, poverty, and so on. All are important, and we cannot take a pass on any of them if we are to obey the Lord’s command to be salt and light in a decaying and darkening culture.

Yet I do believe we are to have priorities, which is why I as an individual have just signed the Manhattan Declaration, which lists our three highest priorities in society as standing up for life, marriage, and religious liberty. Without these bedrock freedoms related to human dignity, the rest of our commitments will be on shaky ground indeed.

Read the Manhattan Declaration for yourself and see if you agree. If you do, please sign it.

And spread the word.

(Here’s a hint: A great thinker and dense writer, Edwards used imagery in a way that stands out among Christian authors.)

Rush Limbaugh said he hoped Barack Obama would fail and was eviscerated in the oldline media for it. He said this not because he wanted the country to fail under Obama’s leadership, but because he knew it would fail if Obama got his way.

Now, nearly two years after the election and with Congress firmly under Democratic control, where are we? We’re deeper in the economic hole than ever, Obama’s policies have been worse than ineffective, and Republicans are poised for a sweeping comeback. Even Time magazine has taken to calling the president “Mr. Unpopular.”

Rush was right. Obama succeeded … in clobbering the nation. I’m hoping for some real change in November. So are lots of others.

Instead, this point gets snagged on a teetering understanding of a loaded cultural phenomenon, turning the book into a loose cultural survey.
