The Rules

I have to confess that I’m getting tired of hearing people who are down on their luck say, “But I played by the rules!” Do they really think that if you “play by the rules” (which usually means study hard, get a good education, get married, raise a family, and work hard) then we are guaranteed a job, success, and financial security? Life isn’t always like that. Sometimes it’s the people who don’t play by “the rules” who get ahead. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t play by them. In fact, playing by the rules should be expected, not for what we can get out of it, but because it’s the right thing to do.
