India, Inc.

Lest anyone think I never give the president his due, let me say I’m in favor of the India trip.

India:

– is the world’s largest democracy;

– is strategically located to be a valuable partner in the war on terror;

– has a huge U.S. business presence (all the call centers there and high-tech workers here).

If President Obama needs to go to India to conclude some trade and defense agreements, then go. Yes, presidents who are stymied at home often look to make their mark overseas, and Obama is no exception. But I wonder if he could have done this trip with maybe just 1,000 or 2,000 cohorts, instead of 3,000. Our president, it seems, never misses an opportunity to spend taxpayer money, particularly on foreign junkets.
