Up Escalator

When it comes to taxes, the escalator only goes up, never down. Yesterday a friend asked why, if her property value continues to fall, her property taxes continue to rise. Here’s what I said: “We’re not supposed to ask that question…! It happens because [government officials] have been there too long and think it is our job to serve the government rather than the government’s job to serve us. It happens because we let them.”
