Stagnation

The economy contracts and the media assure us it’s just due to “temporary factors.” Jobless claims jump and it’s still “within the range of employment growth.” Why do the media feel so constrained to spin bad economic news as good for this president? Even if you want to go along with the spin, and I don’t, the fact remains that this is the worst recovery since World War II. Though the nominal jobless rate is the same as when Barack Obama took office–some achievement, that–the fact is that millions fewer people are working, and millions more are on food stamps, disability, and unemployment. We are going nowhere fast, except to perpetual, European-style stagnation.
