Bemused

A group of angry Democrats and left-leaning independents marches on the White House one night, torches and pitchforks in hand. They are shocked by the crushing price increases to their healthcare coverage. They rattle on the gate demanding to see their messiah. Eventually, Barack Obama emerges onto the White House lawn. The torchlight reveals a bemused smile on his face.

“Who gave you the right,” the people demand, in tones both enraged and befuddled, “to take over our healthcare, to jack up our costs, and to force the insurance companies to drop our coverage?”

“Why, my friends,” the president says in his soothing tones, a note of surprise in his voice, “you did.”

Then, without another word, he turns around and goes back to bed.
